Interdisciplinary Design – A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity

“With over three decades of experience, my design journey, rooted in Lahore’s historic Walled City, initially embraced Western contemporary styles. However, relocating to Canada in 2007 marked a pivotal return to my cultural heritage, reshaping my approach to incorporating traditional Pakistani elements into my work. This philosophical shift is epitomized in the “KHATT” project, inspired by the traditional Sindhi charpai. KHATT is a versatile, collapsible piece that functions as a stool and a table, marrying cultural reverence with modern practicality. Crafted from local woods like shisham and shireen and woven with munj rope in vibrant red and black, it addresses the practical needs of global consumers, emphasizing portability without sacrificing style. Developed through digital collaboration with artisans skilled in carpentry, weaving, and metalsmithing, KHATT exemplifies how traditional craftsmanship can meet contemporary design. This project and others like it not only cater to diverse aesthetic and functional demands but also promote cultural dialogue and innovation, demonstrating the value of interdisciplinary methods in creating sustainable, culturally rich design solutions.”
