Working with the ancient craft of lathe turning and employing the traditional application of ‘lac’ color resin, I have embarked on a journey to revive the use of Dalbergia Sissoo wood. ‘Lac’ was once an integral part of numerous crafts in the Indo Pak sub-continent, but its prominence waned with the introduction of plastics, leading to the loss of invaluable artisanal knowledge.
When I embarked on designing the Mortar and Pestle, I set forth two primary objectives. Firstly, I aimed to breathe new life into this fading craft, rekindling the utilization of hand skills that have been overshadowed in the pursuit of modernization and technological advancements. As a conscientious designer, I passionately believe in reigniting the flames of creative craftsmanship and embracing the essence of “less is more.”
Secondly, my vision was to infuse a contemporary design element into a product that has stood the test of time for centuries. This endeavor can be likened to reinventing the wheel, but my goal is to achieve this in a visually captivating and environmentally conscious manner. By fusing traditional techniques with a modern sensibility, I strive to evoke a fresh sense of allure and purpose in these timeless objects.
